On the run…

These are a few of the illustrations I worked on last summer for Team Spirit in London. I did a whole series of them for use in emails, on the web and also in the press (they’re shown here without the final copy placed over the top). They’re inspired by the fragmented, paper-cut stylings of Saul Bass.

confused.com

I recently did some more work for Team Spirit in London on a job for confused.com. I had to illustrate their character in a variety of different situations which would the be used on the internet in conjunction with confused.com’s current TV ad campaign. Above are a couple of frames from the series…

New Year, New Inspiration…

Happy January everyone! It’s pretty chilly out there but I thought I’d brighten your day by sharing some lovely illustrations by Miroslav Sasek. I’ve heard his ‘This is’ books have been re-published so I’m hoping to buy a few very soon!

Monsters Inc.

Pixar have such a lovely way of paying homage to the animation and illustration styles of the past even at the beginning of a very technologically advanced film such as this. This is the opening title sequence to Monsters Inc.

Special Delivery!

I’m always on the look out for old and interesting ephemera and everyday things from the past which speak volumes about their era, so a few days ago I decided to have a look around on eBay to see what I could find. To my delight I found a Hanna-Barbera Gold Key comic book from 1964! I’ve never been much of a comic book reader I must admit but I loved ‘The Jetsons’ growing up and couldn’t resist the chance of thumbing through the old worn out pages, marveling at the old fashioned printing techniques and taking in the wonderful yet ridiculous visions of the future as imagined in the 1960′s. It only cost £5 and arrived this morning all neatly packaged with 46 years of wear and tear! Fab!

Catch me if you can

Catch me if you can

I’ve been working on a series of illustrations recently which had to be really heavily inspired by the designs of Saul Bass and the fragmented, angular styles of the early 1960′s. I wanted to post this lovely series of images showing the title sequence to the film ‘Catch me if you can’ done by Imaginary Forces which is one of my favourite examples of Saul Bass/1960′s inspired design…

Mambo For Cats

A little masterpiece by Jim Flora done in 1955…

Pop the Question?

This is an illustration/design I’ve been working on inspired by the retro styles of Saul Bass. I really love the movie poster ‘Love in the Afternoon’ which was my main inspiration for this piece, it’s got such a great use of negative space. I think you have to be really confident sometimes to just leave big areas of empty space or colour in a design but when you do (and if you can stick to it without being tempted to fill it up with something) it’s so worth it. Less really is more in this case. Anyway, I love this angular, minimal style of illustration. I’m working a whole series using just this style so more to come soon hopefully…

Goose Pimples

This is a new piece I’ve just added to my portfolio. I’ve been researching illustrational techniques that use very limited colour palettes and a lot of black. I don’t usually include any dark outlines in my work but I really wanted to explore this different style and I treated the design a bit like a screenprint…
